About the Author

Jean Gillet has been an elementary reading specialist in central Virginia. She has also served as a classroom teacher, staff development specialist, and university educator. Her professional interests include the diagnosis and correction of reading difficulties, children’s developmental spelling, and children’s writing. Jean’s extensive published work includes topics such as including contributing to classroom instructional materials on writing and spelling. The coauthor of several textbooks for teachers on language arts, reading, writing, and spelling, she received her doctorate from the University of Virginia.

 

Charles Temple teaches courses in literacy, children’s literature, and storytelling at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He trained as a reading clinician at the McGuffey Reading Center at the University of Virginia where he earned his Ph.D. He has co-authored many textbooks for teacher education, including All Children Reading, Children’s Books in Children’s Hands, The Beginnings of Writing, and The Developmental Literacy Inventory.  Temple has worked on literacy and democratization projects on five continents, and currently volunteers as a teacher trainer and children’s book editor in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Tanzania. He plays banjo and guitar, and is a children’s book author.

 

Codruca Temple teaches courses in literacy, applied linguistics, and teaching methods for English Language Learners at the State University of New York at Cortland, where she oversees certification programs for teachers of foreign languages and programs for TESOL, preschool through grade 12.  She earned her doctorate in English Education and Linguistics at Syracuse University. She is coauthor of The Beginnings of Writing. Charles and Codruca Temple have five children and two grandchildren between them. They enjoy reading, writing, sailing, traveling, and walking their dog Jackie along Seneca Lake in Geneva, New York.

 

Alan Crawford is Emeritus Professor of Education at California State University, Los Angeles. A Past President of the California Reading Association, he has done extensive teaching, consulting, and writing on teaching reading in the elementary school, especially for English language learners. Alan has written curriculum for teaching reading in Spanish and serves on the Editorial Review Board of Lectura y Vida. He served as IRA’s representative to UNESCO for many years and was a Senior Literacy Specialist at UNESCO in Paris during International Literacy Year (1989-90). He is a director of Critical Thinking International and frequently presents workshops on a volunteer basis for international development projects in Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

PREFACEScotland, like so many other nations, has produced poetry that is patriotic, that paints landscapes, people and situations, that speaks to personal matters, and those equally everyday matters pertaining to the mind and to the spirit. The Christian heritage of Scotland has long been played out in verse, through Celtic devotional works, Catholicworks, Protestantworks, and not forgetting satires on the Puritanism in Scotland's post-Reformation identity. Language and culture have been equally multifarious in the nation so that three major languages: Scots, English and Gaelic (examples of which are translated in this anthology) compete and co-exist in poetry. The fifteenth-century poet, William Dunbar, joked that there was no music in hell except for the bagpipes, and there speaks something of the historic lowland attitude to the Gaidhealtachd (Gaelicspeaking Scotland, principally the highlands). Hostility and eventual harmony is a marker of the Scottish highlands-lowlands divide as much as for that between Scotland and England. Historic tension is not to be dismissed but, certainly, the poetic palette of Scotland is one of multilingual richness, and shows an enduringly high quality whatever the cultural vicissitudes that play a part. The medieval Makars, most prominently Robert Henryson, William Dunbar and Gavin Douglas, are often taken to represent a golden age when poetry in Scots ran the full range of mood, mode and subject matter. If this has, perhaps, never been bettered, the sixteenth-century lyrics and sonnets of Alexander Montgomerie, Alexander Scott and other poets around the court of James VI, and the eighteenth-century vernacular 'revival' of Allan Ramsay, Alexander Ross, Robert Fergusson and Robert Burns represent at points equally brilliant periods; and the twentieth-century 'modern renaissance' of Hugh MacDiarmid, Violet Jacob and William Soutar proved that Scots remained a viable poetic currency, as a living poet such as Tom Leonard continues to demonstrate.Poetry in Gaelic too has its tradition of peaks where the flame seems to burn more visibly at certain times than others. Alexander Macdonald (Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair), Rob Donn (Rob Donn Mac-Aoidh) and Duncan MacIntyre (Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir) make the eighteenth century a high point in achievement, while Sorley Maclean, George Campbell Hay and Iain Crichton Smith do similarly for the twentieth century: the latter three, arguably, making Gaelic verse the most able variety in Scotland during the last sixty years. Historically, as many successes are scored in Scottish poetry in English. James Thomson, author of The Seasons, joins James Macpherson, translator/creator of the poetry of 'Ossian', in promulgating works that are seminally iconic and influential right across the artistic genres, painting and music as much as literature, in western culture. The romantic, patriotic, poetic image of Scotland is sounded in English as much as in any other language, as the writing of Walter Scott or Lady Nairne attests. James (B. V.) Thomson, John Davidson, Edwin Muir, Norman MacCaig, W. S. Graham, Edwin Morgan, Liz Lochhead, Kathleen Jamie and Don Paterson are all deeply Scottish poets speaking through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the worldwide audience that exists for creative utterance that both emanates from but is never limited by the particularity of place. Having Scottish roots from the Mccombs clan, these poems are lovey, fierce, and beautiful. I love Burns, and plenty of others. I love every Everyman's pocket poetry, Evey book I have bought and plan on trying to get everyone.

I bought this as a gift for my dad. I'm sure the poems are good, but be warned, this is a small sized book, and the print size is tiny. So if you have a hard time reading small print this may not be the book for you. But it's probably a good travel book if you're looking for something small to fit in your travel bag.

This book is full of great poems most in Scots or Gaelic, but some also in more traditional English. This is nice if you have trouble reading Scots. Being of Scottish descent, I love the Scot's language and had little trouble understanding most of the poems. In my opinion, it's a great book. I recommend it.

My daughter loved the book. She is really into poems and escepially if it has to with Scotland or Ireland.

About the Author
Elizabeth Cobbs, Professor and Dwight E. Stanford Chair in American Foreign Relations at San Diego State University, has won literary prizes for both history and fiction: the Allan Nevins Prize, Stuart Bernath Book Prize, San Diego Book Award, and Director's Mention for the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction. Her books include AMERICAN UMPIRE (2013), BROKEN PROMISES; A NOVEL OF THE CIVIL WAR (2011), ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE PEACE CORPS AND THE 1960s (2000), and THE RICH NEIGHBOR POLICY (1992). She has served on the jury for the Pulitzer Prize in History and on the Historical Advisory Committee of the U.S. State Department. She has received awards and fellowships from the Fulbright Commission; Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace; Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; Organization of American States; American Philosophical Society; Rockefeller Foundation, and other distinguished institutions. Her essays have been published in the New York Times, Jerusalem Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, China Daily News, National Public Radio, Washington Independent, San Diego Union, and Reuters. Her current project is a history of women soldiers in World War One.

Edward J. Blum is a Professor of History at San Diego State University. A scholar of religion and race, he is the co-author of THE COLOR OF CHRIST: THE SON OF GOD AND THE SAGA OF RACE IN AMERICA (2012) and the author of W. E. B. DU BOIS, AMERICAN PROPHET (2007) and REFORGING THE WHITE REPUBLIC: RACE, RELIGION, AND AMERICAN NATIONALISM, 1865-1898 (2005). An award-winning author and teacher, Blum is currently at work on a project that explores issues of radical evil during the era of the Civil War. Blum has been a fellow with the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University and with the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jon Gjerde died in October 2008. He was Alexander F. and May T. Morrison professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1982. His areas of expertise included nineteenth-century America with particular reference to immigration and religion, and he published some thirty articles on these subjects. He also published FROM PEASANTS TO FARMERS: THE MIGRATION FROM BALESTRAND, NORWAY, TO THE UPPER MIDDLE WEST (1985) and THE MINDS OF THE WEST: THE ETHNOCULTURAL EVOLUTION OF THE RURAL MIDDLE WEST, 1830-1917 (1997), both of which won the Theodore Saloutos Memorial Book Award of the Immigration History Society for the best book in agricultural history.

Book is alright, covers a lot of concepts, provides background discussions - but has many drawbacks, maybe not the best, especially given its ridiculous price tag.

As a professor, I use this book in my classes since it covers all the main topics in Parallel Programming while keeping an adequate balance between programming (my main interest) and computer architecture.

This book is overpriced and the content is very very dated. Who wants to learn ZPL in today's world? If you want to learn about parallelism pickup a copy of Patterns for Parallel Programming Timothy G. Mattson, Beverly A. Sanders, Berna L. Massingill. Don't waste ur money on this book.

I have done parallel programming on a variety of machines for many years, and have written some widely-used parallel numerical software. Now that I have graduate students of my own and teach courses in numerical and parallel computation, I've been hoping for a book like this to help my students understand the basic techniques, concepts, and problems common to most parallel programming, as well as to use as a reference for courses, without resorting to manuals bogged down in the details of specific architectures. A colleague of mine (who has a large company developing parallel tools and who for many years has taught a course on parallel scientific computing) pointed me to this text, and I'm much more pleased with it than with any recent book on the subject that I can recall.The authors of this book clearly introduce key concepts of extracting parallelism, load balancing, performance analysis, and memory management with a number of well-selected examples and advice clearly stemming from long experience in the field. They describe numerous general principles in an accessible way, without getting bogged down in the theoretical models of dubious utility that are too common in this field. The book is timely, in that it exhibits a clear awareness of current architectural trends, but remains rightly focused on timeless ideas.I suppose the authors cannot be blamed for devoting a chapter to the parallel programming language they have developed in their own work (ZPL), and it is balanced by chapters on the current popular low-level techniques like MPI and threads as well as brief discussions of other proposed high-level languages (although the mention of Cilk is a bit too brief for my tastes). But the real strength of the book is that it is not tied too closely to any particular language or implementation, and instead helps you to recognize fundamental ideas as they appear in various forms.I do wish the book were a bit cheaper, but high textbook prices seem to be a fact of life. A more basic introduction to caches, and the connection between memory locality on serial computers and locality on parallel machines, would probably be helpful. The mention of the powerful idea of work stealing is too brief. And I'm sure I'll find many other things I dislike as I continue to use this book, but overall I'm quite happy with this book as a way to get students into this subject.

Years ago I briefly worked on a hypercube, and when I got this book, I wondered how it had fared. Alas, the hypercube, at least under this name, rated no mention. Though there is a passing reference to a binary 3 cube which is a 3 dimensional hypercube.The authors explain the current state of multiprocessor architectures. The few remaining computer CPU makers have efforts in this field. Intel, AMD, Sun and IBM. The book describes qualitatively the salient aspects of each. One nice thing about the discussion is that it focuses on this, without drowning you in unnecessary hardware details. This turns out to be a key theme of the book. It abstracts out essential hardware properties, so that you can appreciate these and apply the book's ideas without being tied to any given chip.The book also describes an important type of multiprocessor. Cluster machines, where each node is typically some off the shelf CPU, buffed up with a lot of local memory. The key differences between clusters are often related to how the nodes are hooked to each other, by some type of bus or crossbar. Affordability is an important property of clusters; thus the maximal use of commodity hardware. (The hypercube that I mentioned earlier would be a cluster.)For a programmer, there is one overriding idea that you should get from the book. For optimal performance, minimise the internodal communication, compared to the use of a node's cache. The access time of the former can be 2-5 orders of magnitude slower. Details vary with the given architectures, of course. But typically nothing else comes close, in terms of effects on your throughput.

This book is absolutely riddled with errors. The sheer density of errors make the book unusable for any in-depth study.
